This directory contains files for the EarthCARE-ORCESTRA model
intercomparison project, ECOMIP
(https://www.earthcarescience.net/projects/ecomip). Please address
queries to Robin Hogan (robin.hogan at ecmwf.int). The subdirectories
are:

jsg: Files per EarthCARE frame (=an eighth of an orbit) that define
the latitude, longitude and time of the radar and lidar samples. This
information is taken from the EarthCARE Joint Standard Grid (JSG)
files, but we have reduced the file size drastically by not storing
the vertical or across-track grid information.

samples: ECMWF operational forecast data extracted under EarthCARE in
the eight frames of one orbit.

ifs_od-0001_frames: ECMWF operational 9km forecasts extracted for all
EarthCARE frames of ECOMIP. They have been grouped into uncompressed
"tar" files, one per day (since the NetCDF4/HDF5 files are compressed
there is no benefit from using compression). This model stream is now
known as the "ensemble control" (formerly HRES). "od" and "0001"
indicate the class and experiment number used in ECMWF's MARS data
archiving system. The variables are extracted from the second day of
the forecasts at the nearest hour to the EarthCARE frame, and include
top-of-atmosphere radiative fluxes.

ifs_mc-0001_frames: ECMWF operational CAMS 40km forecasts. "mc" and
"0001" indicate the class and experiment number used in ECMWF's MARS
data archiving system. The variables are extracted from the second day
of the forecasts, but since these forecasts are archived only every
three hours, the data may differ in time to the EarthCARE overpass by
up to 1.5 hours. The data include the prognostic aerosol mass mixing
ratios and the 355-nm extinction coefficient, but do not include
radiative fluxes.
